Management of TB Disease
Learning ObjectivesThe learner will be able to outline the management of TB Disease including treatment, follow-up, and Adverse Drug Reaction management.
Management of TB Disease starts once TB is diagnosed and consists of various stages from treatment initiation to completion and post treatment followup.
During treatment there will be continuous monitoring, including adherence monitoring, clinical and laboratory followup, and Adverse Drug Reaction Management.
The treatment course is divided into two phases, the intensive and the continuation phase.
Generally all cases of TB are started on a regimen of six month multi-drug therapy consisting of the four first line drugs. These may come in various forms (FDCs, dispersible tablets, single drug tablets etc.)
If the mycobacterium develops drug resistance at any time, the patient is shifted to a corresponding DR-TB regimen.
