Supportive Supervision: A process that uses dialogue and constructive feedback to help staff, volunteers or entire organizations improve their performance in pursuit of the organization’s mission, while also setting goals for growth and development. It's not a fault-finding exercise but an opportunity to discuss and learn about the field realities and suggest solutions to the problems.

Guiding Principles for supportive supervision:

  • Focus on processes and systems
  • Nurture effective communication with staff
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Involvement and ownership-of supervisor and those supervised.
  • Efficiency and delivery should be target oriented
  • Continuous learning, development, and capacity building of those supervised
