Globally, there were an estimated 450 000 incident cases (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 399 000–501 000) of MDR/RR-TB in 2021, up 3.1% from 437 000 (95% UI: 390 000–483 000) in 2020. The main explanation for this increase is an overall increase in TB incidence between 2020 and 2021, which is estimated to have occurred as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on TB detection.

  • Globally, the estimated proportion of new TB cases with MDR/RR-TB was 3.9% (95% UI: 2.8–5.0%) in 2015 and 3.6% (95% UI: 2.7–4.4%) in 2021; the proportion of previously treated cases was 20% (95% UI: 9.5–31%) in 2015 and 18% (95% UI: 11–26%) in 2021
