Pharmacists remain the first and only health care provider that patients utilize. Pharmacists can thus play an important role in facilitating optimal pathways to the care of tuberculosis (TB), a disease which affects over 9 million individuals every year.
The Peripheral Health Institution (PHI) Pharmacists’ contributions as ‘drug-dispensers’, that is to provide physician-prescribed treatment to notified TB patients, or at best to serve as treatment supervisors under the DOT (directly observed therapy) framework
Pharmacists can contribute to TB care and control in several ways (Fig. 1)
Interaction with laboratory managers for the laboratory supplies to DMCs, NAAT Sites and C&DST Labs .
Interaction with the programme officer for the stock updates at various level (The District TB Centre, TB Unit )
