Learning Objectives

Equip participants with the skills to perform culture techniques and detect growth for accurate tuberculosis (TB) diagnosis.

  1. Understand the operation and principles of the BACTEC MGIT 960 system for growth detection.
  2. Prepare and perform AFB smears from liquid culture accurately.
  3. Prepare the 0.067M phosphate buffer and label reagents correctly for culturing Mycobacteria.
  4. Execute the inoculation of Brain Heart Infusion (BHI) agar.
  5. Follow the MGIT culture reading schedule and interpret MGIT 960 culture detection time frame.
  6. Monitor and detect contamination in liquid cultures.
  7. Identify breaks in the liquid culture protocol and address them.
  8. Interpret MGIT results accurately for TB diagnosis.
  9. Troubleshoot issues related to liquid culture (LC) growth recovery and detection time.
  10. Document MGIT cultures meticulously for record-keeping and analysis.
